Department/Organization: 820608 - UREC Aquatic Center


Normal Work Schedule: Varies based on needs of facility; some early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday hours.


Job Summary: The Lifeguard maintains patron safety through accident prevention. Provides emergency first aid when necessary.


Additional Department Summary: The UREC Lifeguard ensures the safety of patrons by surveilling pool activities and enforcing all University Recreation policies, rules, and regulations. Works to prevent and respond effectively to emergencies as needed. Works at multiple facilities, including the Aquatic Center, Student Recreation Center, and Outdoor Pool Complex, and is a critical member of the facility Emergency Action Plan.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent from nationally recognized training organization (American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis, BSA). CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer. Standard First Aid.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years of age. Must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification. Final candidates must successfully complete Physical Skills Test prior to employment.


Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques. Uderstanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures


Preferred Qualifications: Six (6) months previous work experience as a lifeguard, OR certification through University Recreation/Kinesiology lifeguard course. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification. American Red Cross Emergency Oxygen Administration Certification. American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogen & Prevention Certification.
