Pay Grade/Pay Range: Minimum: $53,500 - Midpoint: $66,900 (Salaried E8)

Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm


Job Summary: The University Libraries Digitization Specialist supports the University’s mission to digitize and make available rare and unique Special Collections materials. Performs digitization using specialized imaging equipment to produce FADGI compliant digital surrogates. Utilizes archival content standards and metadata schemas to generate original descriptive metadata for digital content, including foreign language materials, and performs data normalization for batch processing. Supervises student production work and provides oversight and guidance for student workers to assure quality control of digitization products. Contributes to the planning and implementation of workflow procedures and provides input for setting production goals for assigned tasks or workflows. Utilizes automated processes and server-side scripting to manipulate and store high volumes of batch content throughout the digital asset management lifecycle.


Additional Department Summary: Assists with digital preservation activities to support UA’s participation in the Alabama Digital Preservation Network (ADPNet).


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree; OR bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Ability to work independently and effectively in a collaborative setting. Familiarity with best practices for the lifecycle management of digital collections materials.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience with digitization equipment and image editing software. Supervisory experience. Familiarity with descriptive content standards specific to special collections materials such as AACR2, RDA, and DACS. Competence in metadata best practices and standards for digital collections stewardship, including MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, and METS. Knowledge of at least one programming language.
