Job Summary: The Systems Engineer III provides effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and administration of systems hardware, software, and related infrastructure. Provides advanced level systems engineering and administration to support the functionality and availability of enterprise-wide and mission-critical University systems under minimal supervision.


Additional Department Summary: Works as part of the Research Information Security and Engineering team to manage and support the functionality and availability of centrally managed research systems, especially those supporting Classified Information and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Requires advanced level systems engineering and administration. Serves as a technical lead and primary administrator for Azure government tenants and M365 environments. Supports research desktop administration with Intune. Manages government cloud research backups. Provides direction for strategic technology roadmaps, customer engagements, and security of critical University research data. Monitors systems health and performance after hours. Installs, configures, and maintains Windows servers and desktops and provides technical support to research teams. Works closely with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Systems Engineers and Desktop support teams to support research efforts across campus.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and two (2) years of system engineering or administration experience, or advanced technical work experience in devops development; OR bachelor's degree and four (4) years of system engineering or administration experience, or advanced technical work experience in devops development; OR associate's degree and six (6) years of IT experience to include four (4) years of system engineering or administration, or advanced technical work in devops development; OR High school diploma or GED and eight (8) years of IT experience to include four (4) years of system engineering or administration, or advanced technical work in devops development.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident. Advanced training and certification.


Skills and Knowledge: Experience managing cloud platforms. Experience with PowerShell or Python scripting. Advanced knowledge and management of Active Directory, M365 and Azure. Experience using PowerShell or other scripting languages. Experience with administering Microsoft Exchange. Advanced troubleshooting skills. Basic networking skills. Good communication skills and ability to work closely with internal teams and customers to ensure positive outcomes.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Azure government clouds (GCC, GCC High, DoD). Experience in higher education or defense research environments. Current DoD 8570 IAM Level III or IAT Level III certifications are a plus. (DoD Approved 8570 Baseline Certifications – DoD Cyber Exchange). Understanding of NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC.
