Note to Applicants: UAPD is beginning a recruitment process for the position of police officer.

Officers who are currently APOST certified will be exempt from the PT and ACT WorkKeys test. Applicants who have a lapsed APOST or POST from another state will be required to participate in only the agility portion of the PT. All applicants will need to include a copy of their APOST, Post or lapsed certificate to the application. Job Summary: The Police Officer Trainee II completes UAPD in-house orientation and APOST Academy and Phases required to become a Police Officer.


Additional Department Summary: May drive UA vehicle as needed. Closely observes and adheres to all safety rules and regulations as listed on product and equipment labels and as directed by management. Must be able to work extended hours and overtime to include weekends and holiday hours as needed. Must meet regular attendance and punctuality requirements. Must accomplish the essential functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in a timely manner.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Must have a current certificate verifying the successful completion of the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training (APOST) Commission’s academy; OR a law enforcement officer commissioned in another state, whose certification in that state is valid, in good standing, and was employed continuously as a full time law enforcement officer for more than one (1) year following certification; OR Federal law enforcement agency or U.S. Military Police experience that meet lateral entry equivalency per APOST administrative code. Applicants that are not currently APOST certified must be able to pass the physical agility exam. Physical agility exam includes running the course and completing the following requirements within 90 seconds: push a vehicle on a level surface; climb a six-foot wall; climb through a window-like metal structure; walk a balance beam; drag a 165 lb. dummy. Must be a U.S. citizen. For those that have been in the Armed Forces, an honorable discharge from military service. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Conditional Hire Requirements: Must pass review panel and a comprehensive background check. Must pass psychological assessment, physical, and drug screen. Post-Hire Requirements: Successful completion of the recruit orientation training. A certificate verifying the successful completion of the APOST Commission’s academy OR successful completion of the APOST Commission’s academy for lateral/refresher course within six months of being sworn in as a UAPD officer. Successful completion of the University of Alabama Police Department’s field training and evaluation program. After completion of these phases, the position has a 1040-hour probationary period of solo field assignment duty.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work day, evening or night shift to include weekends and holidays. Must be able to work various overtime events, both voluntary and mandatory, based on the needs of the department and the university community. Must be able to perform foot patrol and work outside in all weather conditions.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to learn and utilize computer software designed for law enforcement. Good attention to detail. Good communication skills. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to use good judgement and make effective decisions. Ability to demonstrate courage and take responsibility. Demonstrated to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict.


Preferred Qualifications: Current APOST certification. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education. Five years of continuous work experience as a sworn law enforcement official. Foreign language and culture skills and/or experience. Experience working in a community-oriented policing environment with an emphasis on service in a higher education environment/community.
