Job Summary: The IT Technical Specialist V performs advanced IT activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring the expert knowledge and professional application of IT principles, practices and techniques in accordance with industry standards and university policy. Requires a great amount of evaluation, originality or ingenuity. May be responsible for training, assisting or supervising lower level IT personnel and other staff. May lead projects and cross-functional activities.


Additional Department Summary: This position will support daily operations and strategic planning of UA’s HPC clusters. This position is responsible for frequent interaction with researchers to understand their scientific pipelines, identify their research compute needs, and support their HPC research and pedagogy. Will install, configure, monitor, document, and maintain HPC open source and proprietary software. Develops and implements HPC application and tool solutions using Python, Conda, MATLAB, C, Mathematica, or other relevant programming/scripting languages. This position monitors and reports on cluster performance and assists with the resolution of system and user problems. Assists researchers with access to off-site research computing resources (ACCESS/XSEDE, OSG, ORLN, etc.). Works with HPC engineers and systems administrators to support HPC clusters. Responsible for presenting quarterly presentations on HPC topics and training to UA’s HPC user community. Advises on HPC technology directions and investments to management.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and three (3) years of IT experience; OR Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of IT experience; OR Associate’s degree and seven (7) years of IT experience; OR High School Diploma or GED and nine (9) years of IT experience. Knowledge of advanced programming, networking, system, multimedia, instructional or security technology skills or knowledge of project management methods and applications. May require advanced level training or certification.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Additional required minimum qualifications include a degree in a technical field such as, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or computational science. Must have three years or more experience using or supporting HPC clusters, software, and/or applications. Must be proficient and have a solid foundation of HPC cluster fundamentals. Linux skills (building software, run-time environment configuration, performance monitoring, and shell tools/scripting) required. Must have experience in programming/scripting (Python, Conda, MATLAB, C, or Mathematica). Experience in compiling, configuring, and managing HPC software. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications: A masters’ degree or greater in a technical field (computer science, engineering, mathematics, or computational science) and four or more years of experience using or supporting HPC clusters, software, and/or applications. Experience using or supporting any of the following:
- Parallel programming techniques (MPI, OpenMPI)
- Experience with GPU accelerated AI/ML/Computational research (OpenACC, CUDA)
- Experience installing and deploying common frameworks such as scikit-learn,
TensorFlow/TensorBoard, Keras, Theano,
Caffe, Pytorch, MXNet, DGL, etc. on both GPU and CPU architectures
- Experience with hands-on HPC cluster hardware installation and support a bonus
- Experience with cloud HPC and/or storage, data transfer networks (Globus) a bonus
